Tony Hillerman stands out as Southern Utah's favorite mystery writer. Hillerman's work revolve around the Navajo Reservation in the Four Corners area.

The Wailing Wind provides us with a mystery that spans the generations. In this work, Hillerman expands the role of the promising young officer Bernadette Manuelito who must battle the good ole boy network in the wake of having made minor mistakes in while handling what she thought would be a routine rousting of a drunk, but was in fact a murder.

Jim Chee continues the conflict between his role as singer and officer as he is more interested in seeking harmony and balance than in the western sense of justice.

The work also gives us a peek at the romantic side of the venerable Joe Leaphorn, as he ties the current murder with a kidnapping/disappearance earlier in his career.
